Daily Illuminator Archive for August 2010
August 1, 2010:
Since we're smack-dab in the middle of convention season, I thought I'd share some advice about surviving these multi-day events.
It may sound silly, but keeping yourself hydrated will make a world of difference. Everyone is used to drinking more when you sweat, but when your moisture is getting pulled out from talking too much, or from over-conditioned convention center air, the dehydration can go unnoticed . . .
August 2, 2010:
For a week without any time travel, e23 is sure messing with the timeline. Neither Fantasy-Tech 1
nor Space Gamer #32
are historical, and yet they are . . .
GURPS Fantasy-Tech 1
is written by Matt Riggsby, whom you may remember from the recent historical supplement GURPS Hot Spots: Renaissance Florence
. . .
August 3, 2010:
The question arises from time to time: "How is a GURPS
book created?" The answer is a bit long for a FAQ, and changes from time to time (and no two publishers do things exactly the same way). Here's our process, in broad strokes . . .
August 4, 2010:
In honor of Gen Con, our Twitter feed will be exploding with Munchkin
effects! The full rules are here, but here's the short version: follow @SJGames on Twitter, and from Thursday morning until Sunday night you'll get a Munchkin
effect every couple of hours . . .
August 5, 2010:
Do we have a special Gen Con rule for the Munchkin Silver Piece
? You bet we do! . . .
August 6, 2010:
It really makes Team Zombie happy, in our brainless way, to see the good reviews of the Zombie Dice
app . . . and the mini-reviews on Twitter are especially fun, because every so often we can reload and get another one, like:
@mkblack Simple but fun and it cracks me up when the shotgun goes off.
@sjsuperone the best .99 I've spent on the app store...Gory, nerdy awesomeness!
@satyr69 almost as addictive as the real BRAINS
@ggilchrest Loving it! Braaains!!!! . . .
August 7, 2010:
A couple of years ago, we decided it would be interesting to do apps. At the time we started, that really meant “do iPhone apps.” Apple ruled the app market . . .
August 8, 2010:
We are looking for a contractor to port the Zombie Dic
e application to run on Android touchscreen devices. ZD is only our third app, and this will only be our second Android port, so this contract is not routine for us . . .
August 9, 2010:
Back in 2008, we announced that we'd gotten a license to produce RPG material for Dream Pod 9's Heavy Gear
universe. We had a plan, and with e23, we had the distribution path . . .
August 10, 2010:
If dungeon delves are good for anything, it's taking a young lad from the farm and turning him into an armor-clad hero. The Dungeon Fantasy
series helps you tell that story . . . Adventurers
gives you the foundation, The Next Level
shows how to buff up that brave rescuer of princesses, and now Dungeon Fantasy 11: Power-Ups
takes your hero to even more dizzying heights of awesomeness! . . .
August 11, 2010:
Did you know that we put all our Munchkin
rulesheets online? If you did, congratulations! . . .
August 12, 2010:
players know that "GUAL" stands for "Go Up A Level" -- one of those lovely treasures that instantly boost your level, no monster whacking required. However, we've recently announced Munchkin Go Up A Level
. . .
August 13, 2010:
Science has been getting it all wrong. The Earth is the center of the universe and doesn't move (if it did, you'd feel the wind, wouldn't you?) . . .
August 14, 2010:
Around the office, we have a fair number of technophiles. A common statement overheard is "I love living in the future." Author John Scalzi (if you haven't read Old Man's War
, go do it now!) had a similar thought on his blog, pointing out that when his smartphone isn't as smart as him, he's actually annoyed
. . .
August 15, 2010:
-heads have been waiting patiently for an update on GURPS Low-Tech
ever since we talked about the release plans back in April. So, where is the book now? . . .
August 16, 2010:
Space Gamer #33 was released two weeks ago, so last week the release was obviously Space Gamer #34
. Where #33 focused on play-by-mail, #34 includes articles on miniatures -- advance painting tips, a survey of minis manufacturers (current as of December 1980), and a Designer's Notes article from the artist behind Cardboard Heroes
. . .
August 17, 2010:
Yes, we got back from Gen Con last week. However, the report had to wait until this week, as my lack of sleep downgraded my word-smithing from "average" to "Dan Brown." (Kidding!) . . .
August 18, 2010:
Munchkin's recent switch to color makes John Kovalic's art cuter, wackier, and more funny. So how do we make them even better? . . .
August 19, 2010:
Isaac Bonewits, an influential neopagan philosopher and activist and the author of Authentic Thaumaturgy
, died on August 12. He was 60 . . .
August 20, 2010:
Working for the Hidden Masters as I do, I often get to sneak a peek behind the curtain at what other parts of the conspiracy are doing. Shortly after I purchased a shiny new iPad last April, I became part of the beta-test team helping with the Zombie Dice
app for the iPhone . . .
August 21, 2010:
We've barely unpacked from Gen Con, and we're already getting ready for PAX Prime. Yes, we're returning to Seattle for the Penny Arcade Expo, three days of gamers playing games -- board and card, console and PC, handheld and phone . . .
August 22, 2010:
Next week, Ross, Phil, and SJ will be headed to Madison, WI to meet up with John Kovalic. They'll be attending the ACD Games Day, a trade show put on by one of the larger distributors . . .
August 23, 2010:
Pyramid normally focuses on one particular theme. Issue #22, however, takes that focus to a new level . . .
August 24, 2010:
Coming this November, just in time to become stocking stuffers for your favorite little munchkin . . .
Star Munchkin: Space Ships
introduced Ships to the world of Munchkin
. You guys immediately asked why we didn't have Ships for Star Munchkin
as well . . .
August 25, 2010:
In an Illuminator last week, Paul made a cryptic reference to the Munchkin Quest Gauntlet
. Some folks, reasonably, asked what the heck he was talking about, since we haven't announced anything with that name . . .
August 26, 2010:
Our German friends who do translations of Munchkin
are known as Pegasus Spiele. They have no relation to Pegasus Games in Madison WI . . .
August 27, 2010:
Remember the Munchkin
Twitter Explosion thing we did at Gen Con? It was fun for us, and, based on the feedback we got, for you Munchkin
maniacs out there as well . . .
August 28, 2010:
With all the planning going into PAX Prime, it would be easy to overlook Dragon*Con. However, it would be quite silly . . .
August 29, 2010:
As the creator of the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy
series, I hear that a lot. I'll try to explain . . .
August 30, 2010:
Take one part covert ops, one part martial artist, and one part thief, mix well and serve in a cloak of darkness in a classic dungeon. What do you get? Dungeon Fantasy 12: Ninja
. . .
August 31, 2010:
As you may have guessed by our repeated gushing, we're big fans of PAX, both Prime and East. You may not know, however, about Omegathon . . .
