May 11, 2010: Post Office Cutbacks

So the Post Office wants to do away with Saturday mail. Hmm. How much should we care?

Over the last few months, the Postal Service has brought me:

  • Junk mail.
  • Printed confirmation of bills I had already paid by e-mail. (The people who send those are really missing the point. Hello, Time Warner! I'm talking about you!)
  • The government letter telling me the census form would come soon and it was really really important that I answer.
  • The census form.
  • The government letter telling me the census form had come recently and it was really really important that I answer if I hadn't already, and if I had, well, never mind.
  • Magazine subscriptions. (The only things on the list I care about. But nothing in a magazine is time-critical any more.)

So . . . for me, personally, they could cut home deliveries down to ONE day a week. If something isn't important enough to send by FedEx or UPS, it's not worth running up the federal deficit to subsidize its delivery.

PS - If I could put my name on a "return all my junk mail to the senders, postage due" list, that would be even better, but I know that's crazy talk. Still, you folks PAY me for crazy talk, and it IS a good idea . . .
